By Nicole Francis Hypothyroidism refers to a condition where there is an underproduction of thyroid hormones that is linked to depression, fatigue, weight gain, insomnia, memory loss, dry skin, brittle and dry hair, thickened tongue, constipation, and light or no menses. As you may know, one of the causes of hypothyroidism is iodine deficiency. Iodine is an essential trace mineral and a very important ingredient in the thyroid hormones: thyroxine and triodothyronine. Did you know that approximately 80% of the iodine found in the body is located in the thyroid? By influencing the thyroid’s activities, iodine plays a vital role in basic metabolism and bodily processes. For instance, it helps regulate body temperature and maintain energy levels. It also plays a key role in blood cell production, muscle and nerve function and, helps keep your hair, skin, teeth and nails strong and healthy. It even assists the body in the destruction of toxins. Iodine is one of the natural remedies that can help boost thyroid function and eliminate the symptoms associated with this condition, including slow metabolism. But it’s not the only one. There are other natural medicines such as herbs that can also positively impact under-active thyroids and help you feel more energized, happier and healthier. Natural Treatment for Hypothyroidism Fortunately, low thyroid function can benefit from a natural treatment reason why its worth taking the time to learn more about your options. You may find that it is a safer way to alleviate the symptoms associated with an under-active thyroid gland than common prescription drug approaches. And even though you may be taking thyroid medication most of these natural remedies can be added to your treatment as long as you tell your doctor and he or she works with you to adjust your dose of medicine. Proven Herbs for Low Thyroid Function Some popular herbs that can help hypothyroid conditions and are commonly used are: Ashwagandha root is also known as Indian ginseng or winter cherry. It is a well regarded herb in Ayurvedic medicine and has been traditionally used in cases of debility, impotence and premature aging. Recent research conducted with animals has shown that ashwagandha may stimulate thyroid function by enhancing the concentration of serum T4. Kelp is a type of seaweed that is good for thyroid function, arteries, and nails. Kelp is rich in iodine, a mineral that is necessary for the synthesis of the thyroid hormones. It is also used to stimulate metabolism which is why it is often found in some herbal slimming supplements. True North of Your Career Search: Creating a Professional Mission Statement

June 19th, 2008 by averilnadeau

By Nina Ham Suzanne was accustomed to sweaty palms. Getting established on the speaker circuit, she hadnt yet moved beyond stage fright. On one occasion, however, she was delighted to find her palms dry! What was the secret? Talking it over with her coach, she saw that her topic, and this particular audience, was precisely in line with her vision of her purpose, the reply to why Im here. She had been true to her professional mission statement. The experience of being aligned in this way apparently left no room for self-consciousness or fear of rejection. Like Suzanne, taking the time to think about your answer to why youre here on the planet to articulate your mission statement will serve you in many ways. Being in alignment As was true for Suzanne, when youre doing a piece of work thats in accordance with your mission, you may find you have such heartfelt connection with what youre saying and the people youre speaking to, that there is no room for self-consciousness or performance anxiety. Wellspring of energy and inspiration If youre in the midst of a career search, a mission statement reminds you of the wellspring from which you draw energy and inspiration to find or create the work thats right for you. It links together those times in your life when youve felt most vital and on purpose, restoring you in times of confusion or discouragement. Guidance for decision-making In practical terms, a mission statement will guide and corroborate your process of decision-making. Like the North Star, its a point of reference as you move through the stages of your search, helping prioritize the factors on your want list and sort through opportunities as they appear. It will support you in resisting whats easy in favor of whats important. The format of a mission statement A mission statement contains three elements: What is my purpose? Why, or to have what impact? On whom? (Individuals? Groups?) It completes this sentence: I am here to _________ so that _____________ for _______________ . Examples: I am here to promote justice so that there will be greater economic opportunity for the disenfranchised. The first phrase, to serve justice, refers to the what. It may represent a top priority in this persons life, a value, or a calling. It can have an action orientation (promote justice) or a feeling orientation (I am here to inspire leaders). The why, or so that phrase refers to why it matters, or to the impact that action or quality will have. In the example, I am here to inspire leaders to bring out the best in people, the impact is implied rather than stated: so that people contribute their best. Creating a mission statement To arrive at a mission statement thats empowering requires that you commit time to creating it. People often find it useful to actually schedule some personal retreat time, leaving the familiar daily obligations and distractions for a day or two. Once away you might prepare for the writing phase by taking a walk, doing some inspirational reading, or sitting quietly for a period, inviting the left brain or intuitive part of yourself to join in. Reflect on what matters most to you. What do you want to contribute? What will bring you fulfillment to leave behind, at the end of your life? What do you most want to be remembered for? The more specific you can be, the better the statement can guide you. Even if you start with generalities now I want to help people you will be able to make them more specific over time. In giving thought to what impact you want to have, and on whom, its often helpful to start by ruling out certain groups. You may know, for instance, that you dont want to help people with terminal illnesses, or people who can afford to pay high prices for help. Just remember you dont have to do it right immediately. Once youve started, creating a mission statement may take on its own momentum, so that you find yourself thinking about it unexpectedly, or recognizing elements that should be included in decisions you make. A word to the modest: Heres an important caution for those of you who are shy about THINKING BIG about yourselves. What youre here for is big! In one sense, its all there is. But its also not a solo endeavor. Whatever your purpose is, youre standing on the shoulders of some who have gone before you, and youre preparing the way for those who follow. So beware of false humility, and beware of those pessimistic inner voices that say youre being grandiose. William James has given us a fitting definition of a hero: someone who acts as if what he or she does makes a difference. Your mission statement is your claim to heroism. Weight Loss - The DEW Method - Part 1

June 15th, 2008 by averilnadeau

By Simon Volk This is the first article in a three part series on using the DEW method of weight loss. Each article will focus on one letter in “DEW”. Today we will discuss the “D” which stands for diet. I started out with the “D” word, can you believe it? Of course you can, as any weight loss program has to take this into consideration. Here is the simple fact - you can not eat 5000 calories a day (or each meal for some of us) and expect to maintain or even loss weight. Unless, of course, you have a very physical job or run marathons every other day, then you might need the 5000 calories a day to fuel your body. A couple of common sense items is all for this area. You need to control the number of calories you take into your body. There are plenty of diet books and websites that will help you decide what is right for you, but somewhere around 2000/day seems to be the norm. It is different for men and women. Here is the key - whatever you decide is right for you spread them through out the day. If you try to “diet” and eat little or nothing for breakfast and lunch and then eat all you calories at dinner (followed by a late night snack - come on I do it too so let’s be honest). This pattern causes your body to go into survival mode due to the starvation the first half of the day and store most of the calories as fat when it finally does get feed to get it through the next morning. So find a way to spread your calories out over the day, small amounts ever couple of hours to keep the hunger away and feed your body as it needs it, not all at once. So I packed my desk at work with low calorie items (pretzels, granola, almonds, etc.) and between meals (10 am & 2 pm) I would snack a little to keep my metabolism up. And I had a snack again at night, it is important if you do this you give your body time to process those calories. Right before bed it not the right time. Try to make your final snack 2 - 3 hours before going to bed if possible. There are plenty of diets out there and even more information on “what” to eat. I will leave that for you to decide what works best for you. Again, my point is that when and how you eat is maybe more important than what you eat. This three part series is an expanded version of my original article The D.E.W method - how I lost 13 lbs. I hope this information has been helpful to you and check out part 2 when we discuss the “E” which stands for exercise. A final reminder, before starting any diet or exercise program consult with your physician to determine what is right for you. Good luck and good health. Home Remedies for Yeast Infections

June 7th, 2008 by averilnadeau

By Linda McCormack Home remedies for yeast infections are becoming increasingly popular and everywhere you go, yeast infection sufferers will have their own unique home remedy which they believe to be the very best. For many years now, over the counter drugs have been available to treat yeast infections, but more people are beginning to realise that taking medication time after time may not be the answer and could, in fact, make things much worse in the long run. Home remedies for yeast infections really come into their own when people who get recurrent bouts find a remedy that suits them and implement it at the first sign of an attack. Furthermore, many home remedies for yeast infections take a more holistic approach that is they treat the problem as a whole rather than just masking the symptoms. This means that the likelihood of having numerous attacks is greatly reduced as the root cause is dealt with instead of being covered up. This overall approach, when combined with a home remedy for yeast infections which will target the presenting symptoms achieves a two pronged result: the sufferer gets immediate relief without using drugs or having to spend money on prescription medication and the longer term affect ensures that the problem does not keep occurring in the future. Whilst a plan like this can take a degree of commitment from the sufferer, most people who use home remedies for yeast infections report a lessening of the immediate symptoms and a feeling of overall wellbeing, which in no small part comes from the feeling of being in control of the yeast infection at last. Home remedies for yeast infections have been around for centuries. The yeast that is responsible for the infection cannot be cured by antibiotics but nature, in her wisdom, has provided us with a wealth of natural substances which provide an excellent source of quick and effective relief from the symptoms of yeast infections. A good home remedy for yeast infections will provide you with information on why it works. The plan should explain the properties of the treatment, whether they are anti-fungal or healing, explain which natural supplement is best and why and show you ways to alter your lifestyle and habits so as to maximise the effects of the home remedy. When choosing home remedies for yeast infections you should look for someone who has done their research and can prove it. Ideally, it should be someone with first hand experience of a yeast infection problem, someone who has used home remedies for yeast infections themselves and been successful both in treating the initial outbreak and in keeping the problem at bay. Home remedies for yeast infections definitely work; its simply a question of finding the right one at the right price that works for you. Genetically Modified Food Can’t Just Be Wished Away

June 1st, 2008 by averilnadeau

By James Wachai Writing in the Washington Post last week, Jeremy Rifkin, the president of Foundation on Economic Trends, a nongovernmental organization sworn to the destruction of modern agricultural biotechnology, argued that genetic engineering, especially in relation to agriculture, is fast losing its agricultural relevance. And he asked multinational biotech companies to cease touting genetically modified food as the next great scientific and technological revolution in agriculture and the only efficient and cheap way to feed a growing population in a shrinking world. To assert that agricultural biotechnology is losing its relevance is to misstate facts. Contrary to Rifkins misleading postulation, agricultural biotechnology, and specifically genetically modified food continues to gain prominence. You only need to read the latest report on global area of biotech crops by Clive James to conclude that Jeremy Rifkin is economical with truth regarding public attitude towards genetically modified food. Rifkin, in his vain attempt to downplay the gains made by modern agricultural biotechnology believes that Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) is the new kid on the block and should be embraced in the place of obsolete transgenic technology. He exhorts using twisted logic lacking in scientific justification - the virtues of MAS. Unlike transgenic technology, marker assisted technology, to Rifkin, guarantees clean seeds that, unlike genetically modified seeds, cant potentially compromise consumers health and the environment. What a lie! What really baffles me, and I am sure other readers who stumbled on Rifkins article, is its richness in abstractions and falsehoods as is illustrated above. Rifkin, wrongly, contends that marker assisted selection holds the key to sustainable agriculture. How true is this without watertight evidence to show what the so-called marker assisted selection has achieved? How many acres or hectares of land are currently under Rifkins marker assisted selection crops? In the absence of such evidence, is one not justified to conclude that Rifkins real motivation is to mislead the public about genetically modified food? Transgenic technology remains unrivalled in terms of developing high yielding and pest resistant crops. This, perhaps, explains why since the commercialization of the first genetically modified crop a decade ago, more than 240 million acres of these crops have been planted in a record twenty one countries. Surely, twenty one countries cant be wrong on genetically modified crops. The increasing acceptance of genetically modified crops is not as a result of sophisticated marketing campaigns by multinational biotechnology companies as critics of genetic engineering would like everybody to believe. Genetically modified crops have true value to farmers. If the likes of Jeremy Rifkin passionately believe in the superiority of marker assisted selection, they should let it compete with transgenic technology and leave farmers to exercise their right to choose. The argument that transgenic technology should be discarded to pave the way for marker assisted selection is defeatist. Let both exist side by side and see which will gain support in the farming communities. James uses his communication expertise to create awareness about GM food. How to Guarantee Board and Colleague Support for Your Nonprofit’s Marketing Plan

May 29th, 2008 by averilnadeau

By Nancy E. Schwartz You and your staff and board colleagues spend a lot of time planning and fine-tuning your nonprofit’s marketing plan. But once the plan is approved, the pressure is on you — the nonprofit marketer — to carry it out successfully. How can you ensure that board and staff members will continue to support the plan? And how do you guarantee that colleagues will agree with your actions going forward and be pleased with results? At times like these, nerves can run as high as expectations. Over the years, in my work on staff and as a consultant, I’ve found that nothing works as well as clear, frequent communication in a situation like this. Make sure you communicate frequently and thoroughly to your board and colleagues, so they aren’t surprised at any step along the way. There’s absolutely no way for you to predict their actions but you’ll be treating them with the utmost respect and, through including a broader group, be likely to receive some very useful feedback along the way. Here are some tips to pave the way for a smooth implementation process: • Before you take another step, work with the board to define a series of benchmarks to be met as you bring the marketing plan to life. The benchmarks should be designed to motivate review of activity to date and course correction if necessary (averting the possibility that you’ll go too far in the wrong direction). • Plan how frequently, and via what means you’ll update board members and relevant colleagues on your progress. Think of this group as your marketing team and let them know what they can expect from you.

I recommend a periodic group email report, and occasional update meetings. • Consider what you are seeking from your marketing team. And the kind of input they demand? Will you be soliciting approval or just keeping folks updated? More input is not always useful, especially when it comes to design issues.

You’ll want to come to the table with a concrete recommendation that is feasible for you to maintain while meeting your marketing budget and timeline. Also, make sure you define what results you can deliver. The kind of marketing you’re doing generates tangible results. Let your team know what you expect. But remember, nothing is worse than promising what you can’t deliver. • Let your marketing team know immediately if (and we can probably say "when") you come up against stumbling blocks. Nothing is better than an immediate group email to update team members on a glitch and your intended solution. Not only will they feel included, and satisfied to be made aware of a diversion from the original plan – you give yourself great pr by providing an immediate solution. When you put these four tips into play, you’ll be doing as much as is humanly possible to make sure the marketing plan implementation goes smoothly. Nancy E. Jewelry Insurance - Hints and Tips So You Don’t Get Ripped Off

May 26th, 2008 by averilnadeau

By David Foard As crime and drug use increases, the risks involved in having Antique and Estate Jewelry just lying around your home seem to treble. It becomes a nightmare and you find you are just not sure what to do. Here are some timely pieces of advice, but by no means comprehensive. If you have special circumstances, it may pay you to go one step further and get some professional advice. BALANCE AND COMMON SENSE… If you collect Antique Jewelry and your collection has grown to more than ‘Just a couple of Rings’ you will have a double edged sword to handle. In the first place you have two problems. * You are an active buyer, so people know who you are. * Insurance has put ‘Premiums’ through the roof. Personally, we just Hate to see items collected and never worn. Jewelry was made to adorn, so if you can, wear them. But remember this is an open advert to the whole world that you have ‘Got some Jewelry’ at Home. It pays to be just a little aware! YOUR INSURANCE POLICY… Your Home and Contents policy ‘GENERALLY’ does NOT cover your personal Jewelry over a certain amount (this varies from company to company). Plus if you had to claim, the Insurance company may take a ‘premium’ from you (say $100) which they would DEDUCT from the final payout. The remaining value may not cover one item in your collection, yet alone the ’sentimental’ value associated with your personal favorites. So you will have to list all of the items individually and get an Insurance Valuation certificate as well. Because ‘Sentimental’ value does not apply, only the replacement costs, you will have to ensure your qualified gemologist/jeweler/valuer understands why you are having an appraisal done in the first place. This can get expensive as professional appraisals typically cost a flat ‘Take-in’ price of around $20 plus a sliding scale fee of approximately one percent of the final value. In an item is valued around $1000 dollars, that fee is $10 + $20 take-in or $30 total. This is just for ONE item. Valuation Appraisals can cost up to $60 dollars or more so if you have a small collection, you may need a small fortune just to keep up with current prices. The BIGGER your collection - The B I G G E R your cost! But if you don’t want a great outlay, you might just take advantage of the useful ‘Do-it-Yourself’ Online Jewelry Self Appraisal Kit at the Online Jewelry Appraisal Center at the address shown below, which is a great alternative. This ONLINE database system calculates everything for you and prints out a descriptive Certificate and is hundreds of times more accurate and thorough than your local high street jewelers’ scribbled letterhead. At such a low fee it’s money well spent. Indeed, if you just purchased something on eBay or Yahoo auctions, for example, you might wish to just confirm an approximate value by using this easy to use DIY Valuation Appraisal Kit. Suppose you recently bought something from a local Dealer, on the Market or Antique Fair, why not get it checked. What’s the worst that could happen? For less than the price of a Big Mac and Coke it’s a Bargain, plus there are many other advantages to having your Jewelry done at the Online Jewelry Appraisal Center. Your appraisal valuations should be re-done every couple of years as the price of Gold and Silver changes, as does the price of Diamonds and Gemstones and Antiques in particular. We do offer an excellent reminder service to anyone who completes a ‘Do-it-Yourself’ Online Jewelry Self Appraisal Kit with us. This alone is worth the small fee as it relieves you of the problem. But remember that if your Jewelry is lost or stolen, the insurance cover will only help replace your treasure with something of ‘COMPARABLE’ value. It can’t buy you ’sentiment’ and it can’t buy you another Georgian Chatelaine to exactly replace the one you had. You may be able to get another ‘Similar’ item though, and that is better than the few dollars or so, you may have received from the Homeowners policy. It pays to have an up-to-date Certificate. I can’t stress that enough. If in doubt, talk with your trusted Insurance Company. But even if it’s just for ‘Peace of mind’, the small price (less than a Cinema Ticket) is well worth the effort. It’s a No-Brainer really. There are several other SPECIAL REPORTS available through our eMail-on-Demand subscription box at the website, so please take some time to visit. There is a timely warning on Security issues. It’s good advice, plus there is some great tips on Investing in Jewelry, Insurance guidelines and other notes on selling, Hallmarking tips etc, and they are being added to all the time. And the best bit is they are FREE…. Thank you for taking the time to read this special report. If you thought it interesting, useful or found it helped you in any way I would appreciate your comments via email at the address shown below. Bail Bond Agents: The Good, Bad And Not-so-pretty

May 17th, 2008 by averilnadeau

By John Schmidt Bail bond agents are not your friend, not your attorney or your confidant or your confessor. But he is, when you need him, much better than all those. Because if you land in jail, he’s the one person who will travel through the flames to get you out. A good bail bondsman will have reasonable rates, require only fair collateral, and be available at any time of the night or day because you don’t always get arrested during normal business hours. A good bail bonds agent will get you out as quickly as possible, barreling through the bureaucracy that doesn’t care that you are locked up in a very ugly place. But you in turn need to have the right expectations. Legally, the amount of bail is determined by the judge. The catch is it can take several days before a judge actually has time to hear the case in order to set it. Under U.S. federal law a person taken to jail has to be brought ‘without unnecessary delay before the nearest available … magistrate’. Most states follow the federal rule. But ‘unnecessary’ can be up to 48 hours, not counting weekends or holidays. Luckily, most courts have set ‘bail schedules’ that determine bail amount for a common list of offenses. That schedule acts as a guideline for the bail bondsman as well. They typically get 10% of the bond amount as a fee for taking the risk. Incidentally, most don’t take credit cards or personal checks. Bail bond agents, who in effect are money lenders, have a serious responsibility and carry considerable risk. They’re responsible for seeing that defendants show up for trial. When defendants fail to, the bail bondsman forfeits the bail. As a result, they typically require good security before committing to guarantee funds. That security, or collateral, can be savings, a lien on property - jewelry, a boat, a house, the list is endless - or any other attachable asset that will allow them to recoup their money, should you flee the law. Bail bondsmen have one other means of protecting their investment, one you don’t want to learn about first hand. Should you decide not to show up for court on the appointed day, you might just be visited by a bounty hunter (employed by the bail bondsman) to compel you to attend. Bounty hunters are not known for being gentle people. Bail bondsmen often have offices near the local courthouse, but can be found through the phone directory or online. Like any business service, it’s best to get a good reference rather than choosing one blind. It’s also a good idea - just as with having an attorney or doctor - to have one picked out before you need him. At the moment you need him is not the ideal time to be making that choice. Plan ahead. Blind Dates: Why Men Should Never Go on Them

May 9th, 2008 by averilnadeau

By Teddy Shabba Any many who has the pleasure of being single for an extend period of time, has inevitably had a friend, co-worker, or family member tell them they know the perfect woman for you. At which time they either give you her phone number or set you up on a “blind date.” Now any man if he knows what is best will not call or go on a date with any woman with whom he has never even seen or talked to. Just in case (I know you are out there) there are any men who don’t understand why they shouldn’t go on a blind date below is a list of reasons in no particular order. Average to Hot Women have no problems getting dates unless… something is wrong; she has kids, some kind of personality disorder, or an ex that likes to create new ex’s. She is fat, ugly or a combination of the two. I know beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, yet realize that a blind date means that you are going to have to spend some time with her and if she is will that really be how you want to spend it. She is Hot or the Woman of Your Dreams… Yeah right, however, just for a moment lets pretend that she is, now realize that your inner game is so weak that you are going on a blind date that if she is truly hot or sexually attractive you are going to inevitably screw it up with your self doubt and negative self talk. If you really want to meet this “unknown blind date” tell the person who thought of it to throw a BBQ or Wine Party. That way it allows you to be the man and naturally select the woman or if she isn’t your type at least you don’t have to cut the night short and potentially hurt her feelings. If on the other hand you know that self doubt and negative self talk is the real reason why you are single. Get that part of your life taken care of with a dating coach, seminar, or both.
